Whitkirk Arts Guild is an amateur dramatics society and charity in East Leeds. It has been a source of entertainment and a creative outlet for the community since its founding in 1952.

Background & History

Whitkirk Arts Guild originated as a group affiliated with St Mary's Church, Whitkirk, which supported all creative arts in the local community. Over time as the interests of the members changed it became a group which was solely focussed on the performing arts and amateur dramatics.

Since its first performance in a front room with the audience sat on dining chairs the group has been dedicated to providing high-quality, affordable entertainment to suit a whole range of tastes. The annual pantomime is a regular fixture for many families in the area, offering plenty of people their first taste of this traditional theatre. The rest of the society's annual programme varies year-to-year, with a mix of musical theatre, concerts and plays, and themes as wide-ranging as family-friendly storytelling, adult comedy and challenging real-life dramas.

In 2024 the society became a registered charity, with the goal of promoting the eduction in and appreciation of drama and musical theatre in Whitkirk and the surrounding areas.

Activities

Whitkirk Arts Guild normally stages two productions a year; a family pantomime in the approach to Christmas, and either a musical or revue over the summer. In addition to this Whitkirk Arts Guild occasionally stages plays and smaller productions either independently or in association with larger events in the community.

Outside of stage productions Whitkirk Arts Guild is similarly active, with a varied social calendar for its members, their families and friends of the society.
